An International Driving Permit, often known as an IDP, is a crucial piece of travel documentation. It is a translation of your driver’s licence into 10 different languages, including the six official languages used by the United Nations, making it a valid form of identification in over 150.
How does one go about getting a licence valid in many countries?
United States Department of State-approved organisations that can grant International Driving Permits (IDPs) are the American Automobile Association (AAA) and the American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA). Individuals applying for an IDP must be at least 18 years old, and their driver’s licences must be valid for at least six months beyond the day they get their IDP.
Once an International Driver’s Permit has expired, it cannot be renewed for another year.

International driving permits are available at all AAA retail locations in the United States, and can also be ordered online and shipped to you. Having your passport photos taken at the local AAA office is just one more perk of submitting your application in person.
There is also a $20 fee when you buy it from AAA. There is no fee for shipping and handling if you are applying for an international driving permit by mail and do not need a special or expedited return in order to receive your permit within a few business days.
If you plan to mail your application form and supporting papers to AAA, remember to sign the back of each passport photo. It’s a company policy that you do so.
Checks and money orders are the only acceptable forms of payment for the fee when applying for a permit by mail with any agency. If you want to use a credit card to pay, you’ll need to be physically present.
